BREAKING NEWS: NEVS evaluates restart of 9-3 current product line

I have just spoken with Mattias Bergman at NEVS and he can confirm that NEVS is evaluating the potential of restarting the current 9-3 product line. The evaluation is mainly depends on some certain key aspects:

Supplier readiness to restart supply of parts
Customer demand
Dealer capabilities

One of the major reasons for wanting to restart production Mattias said was that NEVS could hire back production staff and utilize the production plant even before the launch of the EV1.

When NEVS bought the rights to the 9-3 it did not include the drive-train from GM. However Mattias confirms that they are exploring a number of different engines.

Now I know from my talks with different managers at SAAB just after the bankruptcy, that there was a 2,0 liter engine which Saab worked on for a fairly long time, this engine could use the same block and peripheral components for different types of fuel, for example diesel and gasoline. Saab made a BioPower version of that engine as well. The engine was fitted to and test driven in a Saab 9-3 already many years ago. That engine comes from BMW…

It seams like a likely scenario that NEVS would perhaps be exploring this opportunity once again since most of the work on that engine is already done. According to Saab’s VIKING business plan released in the summer of 2011, this engine was to be introduced into the Saab lineup within a few years. It could very well be that this could actually become a reality. This engine has found its way into the Mini and other BWM models.

Another interesting aspect is the Japanese connection that NEVS has. NEVS utilized engineers and production experts from Toyota when evaluating the assets of Saab, that could of course also be a link that they are exploring. Regardless of the company supplying the engines, it will probably be a for of existing power plant.

The diesel option is of course an important one, on that front NEVS can use the 1,9 Fiat diesel since its not regulated by GM.

Just to make clear NEVS have not confirmed anything regarding a potential partnership with BMW or Toyota, its pure speculation on my part!

Nu, vor sa reporneasca productia de 9-3 SS, dar cu alte motoare, in paralel cu EV1 (cel electric) pana va aparea noul model. Asta fiind peste vreo 3-4 ani.

In a statement today, Fredrik Sidahl from the supplier organization claimed that NEVS intends to produce the 9-3 Convertible.

In reality no such decision has been taken but NEVS are still considering all versions of the 9-3. The final decision on which version that will be built depends on the ability of the suppliers say Mikael Östlund to SaabsUnited

SU has through a very well informed source received solid indications that a very large sale of EV1′s has taken place. The information so far is unconfirmed but the information we have received is of very good character.

As to the amount of cars the source claims that it could be as large as a whole years production or even more.

Pentru ca ma simt masochist azi si vreau sa impartasesc si cu voi sentimentul, va arat viziunea lui Simon Padian pentru ce ar fi trebuit sa fie noul 9-3 (schite si planuri pre 2009 !)

Today we got two images that show Simon Padian’s vision for a next generation 9-3. Those drawings are said to be from the pre-Spyker era, most likely around 2008.

NEVS has entered a long time partnership with the City of Qingdao in China’s Shandong-province. Qingdao initially invests SEK 2 billion, obtaining a 22 percent ownership share of NEVS through a directed share issue. Further investments will be made in a joint venture company in China. NEVS is headquartered in Trollhättan, Sweden where product development and manufacturing is located.

Qingdao’s investment in NEVS will be made in successive stages, and provides NEVS with a financially stable investor, as well as a business partner which provides access to a key market. The City of Qingdao has, through its investment company Qingdao Qingbo Investment Co, Ltd, signed a contract with NEVS’ parent company National Modern Energy Holdings Ltd. and with National Electric Vehicle Sweden AB (NEVS).

”This agreement provides financial resources that form an important contribution to enable implementation of the NEVS business plan,” said NEVS Chairman Karl-Erling Trogen.

”Qingdao is a long term strategic partner in China, which also provides us with a large customer,” said Kai Johan Jiang, CEO and main owner, NEVS.

”Vehicles based on new energy sources are the future. Qingdao wants to take an active part in this development,” said Zhang Xingi, Mayor of Qingdao.

Trollhättan is the NEVS headquarters, with product development and vehicle assembly. China is a key market with great potential demand for Saab vehicles. Qingdao is set to become the hub for NEVS’ efforts in the Chinese market, which means that exports will be shipped through the Port of Qingdao, strategically located on the Chinese East Coast. As production at the Trollhättan plant will reach capacity, a complementary manufacturing facility will gradually be established in Qingdao.

The municipality of Qingdao has a population of nine million, while close to 100 million people live in the Shandong province. The City och Qingdao is a large buyer of passenger cars, including both conventionally fuelled and electric vehicles. The NEVS investment is an important step to secure the region’s access to electric vehicles, and to build an industrial structure where the vehicle industry, including EVs, is key for the future.

As part of the agreement, a feasibility study is now conducted to guide the future partnership.

On August 31, 2012, NEVS acquired the main assets of the Saab Automobile bankruptcy estates, and currently studies the opportunity to commence production of the present Saab 9-3 model in the second half of 2013. The first electric vehicle model is planned for launch in early 2014. In October 2012, a sister company of NEVS in China opened a plant in Beijing producing high-performance batteries for automotive applications.

O mostra din noua identitate de marca SAAB:

Image

New visual identity to extend the Saab car brand

Saab is a strong passenger car brand, built over many years through technology, innovation and progressive design. NEVS is now extending and further developing the Saab brand in passenger cars with a new visual identity. It is founded on the Scandinavian heritage, where the four distinctive seasons, long distances and extreme road conditions have shaped the Saab passenger cars.

National Electric Vehicle Sweden AB (NEVS) has signed a licensing agreement with Saab AB to use the Saab brand for its products and services. The new visual identity has been developed by NEVS together with the design agency Stockholm Design Lab AB as a significant step for strengthening the Saab brand in passenger cars.

The visual identity features the company name National Electric Vehicle Sweden AB in black, and the Saab brand in dark grey or silver. For certain product applications, including bonnet and wheel hub covers, the brand will be applied in silver against a white, circular background.

The four seasons and their respective characteristic road conditions will be visible both using images and together with the brand.

The campaign site www.saabcars.com provides a sample of the visual identity. The new NEVS web site will be launched at this address shortly, while in the meantime, we are referring to www.national-ev.se.

Downloadable images are available through URL links in the news release and in the NEVS online press room.
