Would you like to help us save the last Saab 9-3?

Saabsunited: At ANA in Trollhättan the last cars are currently being assembled. The last car to be built, which is also the last car that could be taken off the production line with a VIN-Number is a white, Saab 9-3 Aero sedan. This car is so far reserved by SaabsUnited.

Regardless of what happens with the bidding process, it is fairly certain that no more Saab 9-3's will be built, since this is most likely the last 9-3 and although we do not hope so, might be the last Saab to be built, we found it fitting to at least reserve the car.

We have so far asked a couple of our sponsors if they would be willing to help us buy this car and then place it in the Saab Cars Museum where it belongs. The response has been very good so far and we've gathered a fairly big amount of money from just a few sponsors.

Hirsch has agreed to make this car special as well and will provide a complete exterior and interior kit for the car as their way of helping out.

ANA will provide this car for what could be considered a non-profit price which is really great of them considering how badly they need more money at the moment.

Everyone who participates in saving this car for the future, will get their names engraved on a metallic plate which will be placed next to the car at the museum.

Right now we are only investigating if there is enough interest to actually start a funding campaign, if you are interested with supporting this project, please send an e-mail to saabsunitedcrew@gmail.com and write who you are, and how much you will be willing to contribute. The minimum expected amount we would need from each and every one is probably 100 Euro's / contributor or family to make this viable.

Lets see if we can save the last Saab of a great era! =)

So how do we do this? We investigated a number of different options for how people can deposit money for this project and after looking at different donation systems etc we decided that the risk of giving away control of this money to someone else was too great as we are talking about a rather big amount of money, so we decided to use Paypal which we’ve used for such a long time and know is secure and works.

We have opened up a paypal account under my name and I have given access to this account to both Jason Powell and Till Drescher and the three of us are able to monitor and manage the account.

One person must remain the legal guardian of the car and take responsibility for it, normally items in museums do not belong to the museum itself but rather to a private person and a contract is written where it is established that the item will remain in the care of the Museum. Even so insurance and registration-fees needs to be billed to a specific person. I am willing to be that guardian and I have discussed the matter of a contract where the car will remain at the Saab Cars Museum for a minimum period of 5 years with the intention of renewing that contract continuously. Normally these contracts are only written for 2 years and then renewed. The contract is made in a matter where nobody will be able to move the car from its current place for any purpose without the approval of the owner which would be me. I am however not able to move the car without the approval of the Saab Cars Museum so in essence it stays exactly where it is.

A question that rose up on our Facebook wall was how people are given credit for contributing to this cause. We came up with the idea of creating a big board which will be placed next to the car and each person who donates money to the project will get their name on that board. Since this is a cause where money is the key factor, we want to use everything we can on this particular cause. Creating certificates which are handed out to each contributor etc costs money and would thus decrease the final amount for this cause. That is not something we prefer. We will list the names of everyone who contributes money, if a person wants to remain anonymous then we will respect that as well.

Its friday afternoon here in Sweden and we’ve checked the status of the donations account. Its been almost 24 hours since we launched the donations campaign and during the first 10-12 hours there was a lot of activity on the account and the majority of the money was donated.

Account Status: €6’472 EUR ($8’555, 57’546 SEK) which is 23% or the required amount.

Average donations are ranging from 10-50 Euro’s per donor with about 10% of the donors giving 100 Euro per person.

31% of the donated money are coming from swedish readers, 14% from germany and 52% from other countries in Europe. Just over 1% of the total donated money is coming from North America and Asia.

Biggest single donation so far was for 1200 euro and came from a dedicated Saab fan in Switzerland! We are hoping to get the clubs to join into this cause and we have heard that some clubs are considering to donate various substantial amounts.

Reaching over 6000 euro in just 24 hours is truly amazing, I have to say that I am amazed about the response so far but we still have a very long way to go. The deadline for providing a donation is the 20th of May at 14:00 Central European Time. That is when we will know if we have been able to complete the task of saving this valuable car or if the money gathered will be sent as a one time donation to the Saab Cars Museum.
